Rene Grivel (#136)

 Basic Image Text
Arrived in 1892 in the US. Year of birth listed as 1868 in the 1900 census. Description of Rene Grivel by Karen Cobeen: RENE GRIVEL was born May 6, 1867 in Alsace Lorraine, France and died in Calexico, Imperial County, California on Jan. 25, 1919. (from death certificate) He lived most of his life in the southwest of the United States and northern Mexico. All of the information I have on Rene Grivel is as related to me by my grandfather, LEON GRIVEL who is now deceased. Rene Givel had extensive land holdings in the Imperial Valley of California and Arizona, which also extended into northern Mexico. At that time period, there were no definitive international boundaries between the two countries or at best, the boundaries were continually in dispute. Grampa related that his father lost all of the land due to some mysterious and complex hanky panky at the time. Rene Grivel had some kind of relationship with Poncho Villa a famous revolutionary in Mexican history, but it is unclear if they were adversaries or what. Great Grandfather Rene Grivel's listed occupation on his death certificate indicate he was a miner and rancher. This matches the verbal history given to me by my grandfather Leon wherein there was apparently a good deal of moving around the state of California and Northern Mexico and BajaCalifornia in search of gold and semiprecious stones. Grampa Leon often referred to "the north fork of the Yuba River" as a productive gold site and another site in BajaCalifornia. Grampa Leon returned to the Baja site when he was 70 + years old only to find the site pretty well used up by someone else prior.
Profession(s): miner, rancher
